Mahjong Master: From Mood Board to Move-In Ready

Some projects have a special rhythm from the start—and the Mahjong Master was one of them. Designed for a client who loves vibrant color, tailored comfort, and timeless pattern, this project came together beautifully from the earliest design boards to the final styling.

The Vision

From the beginning, our goal was to create an elevated and functional home, with a strong, cohesive color palette running throughout. The inspiration came from rich navy tones, warm cognac leather, and accents of green and gold, all grounded with natural wood finishes. Layered with pattern and texture, these colors would bring each room its own character while keeping the spaces connected.

For the bedroom, we envisioned a serene retreat wrapped in navy and cream, accented with soft grey furniture and crisp, tailored bedding. In the living room, we leaned into warmth—pairing a deep blue sofa with cognac leather chairs, floral accents, and a bold patterned rug for a stylish and livable space.

The Design Process

The concept began with detailed mood boards (like the ones shown here) that mapped out every element—from paint color to hardware. These boards served as our design compass, keeping selections cohesive and aligned with the client’s vision.

One of the biggest challenges in this project was transforming the living room from a stagnant, unused beige space to a vibrant entertaining area that will host many friends week after week for game nights and music-filled jam sessions. Rather than set up another formal living room, complete with a sectional, a couple of end tables, and a coffee table that would sit pretty, we maximized the room using a custom-designed game table for mahjong and an intimate seating area where friends and family could be entertained.

Once approved, we sourced every piece, managed orders, and coordinated with trades. A few unexpected moments cropped up—like the peel-and-stick wallpaper needing to be glued down—but this is where having a designer truly pays off. We were able to work with our trusted vendor to have it corrected and expedited, ensuring the finished space was exactly what we envisioned.

The Final Reveal

Installation day was a transformation. The bedroom’s rich navy rug now anchors the space, while patterned bedding adds just the right amount of visual interest without overwhelming. The living room’s mix of textures—plush upholstery, sleek wood, and brass accents—creates a layered, inviting feel.

The result? A home that feels warm, stylish, and personal—ready for both quiet mornings and lively game nights.
