Design Tip of the Month: How to Select Fabric for Drapery
Seabreeze Modern will feature custom drapery throughout the living room, dining room, and primary suite — and let us tell you, selecting the perfect fabric was a journey!
Sourcing fabric for drapery can feel like diving into an ocean of options — there are so many vendors, sample books, and swatches to choose from. Then come the logistics: yardage, lead times, and pricing. It’s enough to make anyone’s head spin!
The best way to start is by setting clear goals for your drapery. Ask yourself:
➡️ Are you filtering light?
➡️ Adding privacy?
➡️ Introducing texture, color, or pattern?
For this project, our goal was to add texture, contrast, and color without distracting from the breathtaking Gulf views. The soft blue horizon and shimmering water already do the heavy lifting — so our drapery needed to complement, not compete.
Here’s how we narrowed it down:
🎨 Color: We wanted to pull in shades of blue and chocolate brown from our design palette, depending on which vignette our client selects.
⚖️ Contrast: With walls painted in Sherwin-Williams Taupe of the Morning, a warm neutral, we wanted the drapery to make a statement through contrast rather than blend in.
🌾 Texture: Instead of a flat linen (pretty, but predictable), we looked for fabrics with visual dimension. The blues we sourced weave together tones of navy, denim, and smoky blue, while the chocolate option layers milk and dark brown with hints of black — a subtle nod to the sleek granite fireplace.
The result? Drapery that adds depth and movement to the room while quietly framing the view. A little texture goes a long way toward making custom drapery feel intentional, elevated, and alive.
